With a running time of a little over twenty minutes, Forage The Ash is a short, and most certainly not sweet little EP of festering vileness. Newly formed this year, the trio is already setting out to capture your attention with a vicious blend of black metal, death metal, and grindcore, though the base ingredient feels like death metal to me.

Though newly hatched from the swamps of the Carolinas (or maybe not the swamps…it just sounded cool), the trio lurches forth fully formed, long-winded gestation period unnecessary. Fronted by Justin Vølus, who also handles bass duties, the lineup also features Dan Inlev on guitar and Nate Smith on drums. Riffs are filthy and feral. The drums keep things cooking, but are slightly low in the mix for my tastes. Vocally, the style, sort of a gurgling black metal style, takes some getting used to, but ends up working quite well.

Forage The Ash is, hopefully, an appetizer of the oblivion yet to come from the Carolinas. A strong work in its own right, it would be nice to hear a full length from this trio. If you like your death metal blackened, grinding and filthy, this one’s for you!

Recommendation – What a great start for a young project. Get in on the ground floor.

Rating – 4/5
