Do you remember being back on the playground in elementary school days? We used to brag: “My dad could beat up your dad!” I’m here to tell you that Ferum could kick all of our dad’s asses…at the same time. All joking aside, this is some tough DEATH METAL. This is the real deal. Ferum gets billed as death/doom, and I get that. There is doom metal in there. But this is first and foremost death metal. Take no prisoners, no holds barred, realest of the real, capital D for Death, capital M for Metal, Death Metal.

Hailing from Italy, Ferum is a power trio made up of Angelica on drums, Samantha on vocals and guitar, and Matteo on bass. And this trio certainly brings the power. Keeping a steady pace of double bass, blasts, and fills, Angelica belies her name by drumming like a demon. Matteo wields the bass like a weapon, bludgeoning us with the thunderous might of his playing. Samantha calls for ugly riff after ugly riff. If these riffs were people, they would be the kind of people who had served hard time in prison for murdering someone with their bare hands. And then there’s Samantha’s vocals. Her deep rumble is a visceral, demonic howl of anger.

With five tracks coming in at less than 25 minutes long, my only beef with Vergence is the length. I crave more. I’m addicted to Ferum and my source has dried up. I keep coming back to this EP for salvation from the unbearable need, and it helps me out every time, but only for 25 minutes. Let me speak directly to Angelica, Samantha, and Matteo for a minute. We need more. You have us hooked. Don’t leave us hanging. Give us a full length!
