When I read the news that Lamb of God would be playing Detroit’s historic Fox Theatre, my eyes opened reeeaaal wide. I don’t typically associate this gorgeous venue with heavy metal concerts. Everyone I shared the news with reacted in the same way: Can the Fox handle this? I mean, Lamb of God is one thing. But with support from Sanguisugabogg AND Fit For An Autopsy, AND Kublai Khan TX?! I knew I needed to experience this madness for myself.

SANGUISUGABOGG

As a Michigander it pains me to say this, but these Ohioans were sick as hell. Rotting away in Columbus, Sanguisugabogg are one of my favorite death metal bands right now. The four of them opened the evening with “Rotted Entanglement” from their killer full-length Hideous Aftermath. There upon the Fox Theatre stage, Vocalist Devin stalked back-and-forth looking for blood, while Cody, Drew, and Eric committed perfectly executed atrocities to our ears with their respective instruments.

FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY

Fit For An Autopsy were up next and serenaded us all with their serrated melodies. Even after a small technical issue at the set’s beginning, these fellas are pros, and quickly rose from the dead to put on a deathcore clinic. A song I was really looking forward to was their most recent single, “The Wretch”. The crowd was into it. I don’t know how you couldn’t be, with Joe’s perfect vocal execution. Josean’s desolate ferocity on drums was unreal, while Pat, Tim, and Peter’s fingers flew like a bat out of hell over their down-tuned strings.

KUBLAI KHAN TX

Before our headliners took the stage, we were treated to a barrage of brutal beatdown hardcore and barking. Hailing from Texas, Kublai Khan are known for having some pretty wiiiiild shows. Their music (especially the breakdowns) just brings out that side of people. And the band didn’t disappoint. Kublai Khan played fan favorites like “Antpile” and “Self-Destruct” and frontman Matt Honeycutt savagely shouted the words to those with such ease. Nicholas and Eric executed their respective stringed riffs and chugs with effortless intensity as well. And then Isaac is just sitting back there on drums like it’s a breeze keeping the beat to some of the heaviest songs I’ve ever heard.

LAMB OF GOD

This was not the first time I had the pleasure to see Lamb of God live, and I certainly hope it’s not my last! Because wow… these guys always bring it. Every single member of this band is a master of their instrument and when you mix them all together, you get fucking magick. After twelve full-length albums, you better believe this show felt like a greatest hits event.

On guitars, both Mark and Willie showed this crowd why they’re legends of the American heavy metal scene. Absolute precision was bestowed upon us in the most brutal way. They both have this dark swagger about them, as if these riffs are their first language and they’re letting us have it. I was especially entranced during the solo for “Walk with Me in Hell”. Which, by the way, was definitely one of the crowd’s favorites of the night.

On bass and drums, John and Art were so much damn fun to watch. Not only did John make every single riff that much heavier in the low end, but his stage presence was somehow both visceral and chill at the same time. Art also played his part to pummel those songs into our core and I swear the dude looked like he’d never had more fun playing those drums than in Detroit last Sunday. Especially when he wowed us all with an incredible drum solo.

Randy Blythe is one of my favorite vocalists in metal. I think because he draws more from a punk background, his growls and screams are that much more snotty, and adds that extra layer of sincerity to the metal. But that punk background is also obvious in how he performs on stage. Randy looks totally comfortable and at home up there, commanding the crowd as if he has them in a trance. When referencing the great music scene Detroit has to offer, he not only mentioned the great Negative Approach, but also hyped up a new Walls of Jericho album!

My favorite concerts are the ones that showcase multiple genres. Death metal, deathcore, metalcore, and real American heavy metal were all on display. Every single hardcore and metal fan in attendance had something to get their heart beating in the most brutal way. I’m looking forward to seeing every single one of these damn bands again in the future. And there’s still time for you to catch this Into Oblivion tour! The bands will be on the road for this through the end of April, so get yourself a ticket at lamb-of-god.com and live a little.

Biography:  Porous has been possessed by heavy music for the vast majority of his life. For a good chunk of it, that love was exorcised by playing metal, punk, and hardcore with other musicians. Nowadays Porous writes/records music mostly on his own, but engages with the community by supporting/encouraging other artists, and one of those ways is through writing! In early 2025 he joined MoshPitNation to contribute album/show reviews, concert photography, and hopefully an infectious love for metal, punk, and hardcore.
