I love weeknight shows. For most people, it takes extra effort that only the hardest of fans can muster to make it out on a “school night”. And that passion was in great abundance when Revocation played the Sanctuary in Detroit last Tuesday night. But it wasn’t just one of the best tech death bands around that drew the crowd, there were also plenty of die-hards there for Nethergate, Judiciary, Inferi, and Vomit Forth.

On my drive to the show, I was followed overhead by one of the most intimidating storm fronts I’d witness yet this year. I’m kicking myself for not getting a photo of it, but was also trying to outrace it so I didn’t miss the first band. And it’s a good thing too, because Nethergate had just started playing as I walked in.

NETHERGATE

Nethergate were the perfect opener for this bill. Not only because of their local appeal and death metal chops, but also the vocalist’s jokes in between songs had me chuckling. Comedic appeal side, this band was tight as hell live, with one of my favorite moments coming at the end as members traded guitar solos back-and-forth. Give em a follow on the Instagrams @nethergate.death.metal

VOMIT FORTH

Of all the bands names I get to type over-and-over throughout this coverage, “Vomit Forth” will never get old. And neither will my memory of their killer set. This death metal act from Connecticut owned that stage from the second they came out. Kane, the lead vocalist, roamed all over the stage, expertly regurgitating his lyrics into that poor microphone. A crowd favorite from the night was “Pain Tolerance”, and I urge you to check out more by them @vomitforth

INFERI

I am a sucker for tight, fast, technical melodeath and the fellas from Inferi expertly served that shit up the other night. I hadn’t seen this group perform live before, but I knew from their music videos we would all be in for an energetic good time. On the mic, Stevie goes all out and you can’t take your eyes off him. Sanjay and Malcom both put on a guitar clinic with their absurd mastery of the instrument. They’re a band I cannot wait to see again. See if they’re playing sometime near you @inferi_official

JUDICIARY

Judiciary at sanctuary detroit october 2025
Up from Texas, Judiciary put in the fucking work that night. From the very start, their vocalist Jake made sure the crowd knew they’d be the hardest band of the evening. As the more hardcore band on the tour, I was going to be disappointed if the audience didn’t get into it. But did they ever. Over the entirety of Judiciary’s set, there were circle pits, a wall of death, a surprise guest on the mic, and so much hair flailing. REVOCATION

Revocation at sanctuary detroit october 2025
I remember hearing Revocation for the first time back in 2011. “Chaos and Forms” was one of my top albums that year as it became a much needed escape due to a year of many lows. Ever since then, every single Revocation album has felt like a masterpiece. Their latest release New Gods, New Masters is no exception and the music video for “Cronenberged” is beyond fun. And when Dave, Ash, Harry, and Alex stormed the stage, that’s the song they tore the night open with. Revocation played a lot off that new album, along with a good dose of tracks from “Netherheaven”, including a go-to for me, “Diabolical Majesty”.

I had sprained my wrist recently, and this pro camera and lens of mine aren’t exactly light-as-a feather. The pain had set in prior to Revocation’s set, and the only prescription… was more riffs. Dave and Harry absolutely shredded the life out of their guitars that evening. Watching those fingers fly over the fretboards was hypnotic at times. There’s also some iconic bass riffs that were an unholy pleasure to my ears in that live setting (thank you Alex). Ash of course is a machine on that drumset. Not a literal machine of course. At least, not yet…

It was a night to remember. Lots of moshing and crowd-surfing. I met some cool new people and got to take photos of five incredible bands. And if you’re reading this before November 15th, there may still be time for you to witness this tour as well! Go listen to Revocation’s new album New Gods, New Masters and follow them on the socials to see if they’re playing near you soon @revocation

Nowadays Porous writes/records music mostly on his own, but engages with the community by supporting/encouraging other artists, and one of those ways is through writing!
