I’m a fan of darkness. And tales of murder. And the word “irrevocably.” The latter term I associate with The Matrix movies. But I digress. Let’s talk about Lust Hag and her new album Irrevocably Drubbed. I’ve listened to this album many times since being fortunate enough to get early access, and every time, new riffs and melodies are revealed to me. I also really appreciated the mix on this. It felt like I was right there along for all the horror, which is even more in your face with the album art’s depiction of a human head being brutally smashed (“drubbed”) with a giant hammer.
Before that sonic horror takes over most of the album, we’re hit with an unbelievably epic fantasy riff in the opening title track that stayed with me for days. Seriously. I’d be washing dishes and hear it in my head. What have you done to me, Eleanor (aka Lust Hag)?! But wow, I love so much when her vocals kick in. Shrieks just dripping with contempt and ferocity. Her signature “ough”s add an extra flourish of fright after so many vampiric musings and cut through many transitions. As far as starts to an album go, “Irrevocably Drubbed” is already winning me over with all the guitar bendy squeals (that’s the technical term) and a chaotic finish to the first song.
From here on out, I could write a review of every track on this album, but we’d be here all day. So I’ll start by simply gushing over the parts that stood out most. Oh wait, the next part that stood out most was in the second song (alright, maybe we will be here all day). At about one minute into “Rancid Manipulations,” after all the sweet doomy riffs, my head starts banging and it doesn’t stop. Then just before the album’s halfway point and interlude, “Stifled Glare” has me locked in with all the sick thrashy riffs and sleazy solos.
So I lied earlier. My head DID stop banging during the interlude. If yours still was, you might want to have that checked out. This (almost) two-minute-long recording features a foreboding melody and what sounds like… scratching? Maybe someone trying to escape being trapped in a coffin? And is that a chainsaw I hear?! While it provided a brief reprieve from the blackened death metal, it left me more terrified of what was ahead.
I don’t know if it’s a coincidence that “Feed the Monolith” had some of my favorite “blegh”s throughout the album. And then the track immediately following it had this maddening, wiley hook about halfway through that left me smiling by how much evil it conveyed. But if I were to pick my favoritest bestest track of them all, it’d be “Ravenous Feast.” Don’t get me wrong, the music in this one is absolutely wretched. But the lyrics have a very Eat The Rich vibe, and they got me fired up. If you’ve heard this song and remember the tom drum fill followed by her shrieking, “and ostracized!” then you know what I’m talking about. If not, then I’m so excited for you to experience it.
“The uprising of the starved and ostracized.”
Out May 9th and available on cassette, vinyl, and compact disc via Fiadh Productions, Irrevocably Drubbed is already one of my favorite releases of 2025. Go listen to it or I will make your face look like this album’s cover art. And while you’re at it, check out Hayduke’s interview with Lust Hag from her self-titled full length.
Biography: Porous has been possessed by heavy music for the vast majority of his life. For a good chunk of it, that love was exorcised by playing metal, punk, and hardcore with other musicians. Nowadays Porous writes/records music mostly on his own, but engages with the community by supporting/encouraging other artists, and one of those ways is through writing! In early 2025 he joined MoshPitNation to contribute album/show reviews, concert photography, and hopefully an infectious love for sincere heavy music.
