“Alexa, play ‘The Boys Are Back In Town.’”
I sit here on the eve of the record release show for this massive album finally channeling my thoughts on it through my keyboard. The boys (Recorruptor) are indeed about to be back in town (Grewal Hall at 224 in Lansing, MI; Doors at 6:30 on August 8th), with a bunch of stellar Michigan guests. Don’t worry if you don’t know where that is. I don’t either. But with Google Maps, we can both figure it out. Anyway, this impending event is what finally spurred me into action to do some writing.
Long an independent act, Recorruptor has signed with the Italian Time To Kill Records for this release, meaning we are finally seeing some vinyl from the fellas, as is proper. If you’ve been reading my meanderings for a while, you know I’m a long time fan of this quintet. I saw them live again back in the winter and they remain one of the best live acts I’ve ever seen. The energy they bring to the stage is so engaging and intense. Seriously, go see them.
If you live too far away, then Sorrow Will Drown Us All is the next best thing. This album comes pretty close to capturing that brutally manic energy. The mixing and mastering is again a step up from their last album, which was a step up from their first album. This one sounds MASSIVE!!!! I love the mix, with everything leveled pretty perfectly, from Josh Moore’s rage outpouring on his drum kit, to the thunder of Alex Schmidt’s bass, to the twin guitar work of newest member Isaac Marier and founding member Seth Earl, to the roars, growls, and screams of Clint Franklin. I’ve been saying this since at least the last album, but this band is ready for a much bigger spotlight. All it will take is for the right people to notice them, because they have what it takes musically and with their polished live set to go international.
What about the music itself? I can sum it up in one word really: exceptional! The band builds on their death metal sound by continuing to perfect their craft. They are technical without being Tech Death and brutal without being Brutal Death Metal. Rather, they use elements from all the varied subgenres of death metal to create their own sound that certainly nods to the genre, but is also fresh. I introduced the band in the paragraph above, but this is a band where each member really does play an integral part in what they do as a whole. Nobody carries the others. Everyone contributes. Clint really is one of the best vocalists in death metal right now (and not just the local scene). The riffs from Seth and Isaac scourge the listeners soul. The rhythm section (Josh and Alex) is more than just rock solid. They are the heavy artillery, obliterating every brain wave.
It is rare that I find a death metal album so completely engaging, but when I do, it is often this band. Sorrow Will Drown Us All builds on the death metal dynasty begun with Bloodmoon, adding new elements and evolving into a band ready to play with the big boys of the genre. Catch them soon so you can say you saw them when they were still underground. You may not have long before that’s no longer true.
Favorite track: This is hard because there isn’t much separating them, but I’ll go with the album closer ‘Scourge of Prometheus.’ Unbelievable!
