Plague of Carcosa/Pillar of Light/Angel of Mars/P. Peltier at Parts and Labor in Melvindale, MI – August 16, 2025

Back in August, Porous and I made the trek down to the Parts and Labor Bar in the working class Detroit neighborhood of Melvindale. Our mission: to capture an on-camera interview with the Chicagoland trio Plague of Carcosa, who had just released what they deem to be their first true full length album In the Dreamless Deep. Watch the video below for further thoughts on that. The venue is what I would call a dive bar, but in this case I mean that in the most complimentary ways possible (the old Mac’s Bar in Lansing, one of my favorite venues, was also a dive bar). I feel like Parts and Labor owns that designation proudly, but I want to be clear that I loved the place. The staff was friendly, the food was good, and there was a great community atmosphere. Definitely go check out some shows there, or just go have a few beverages and a good burger if you’re in the area. While the evening was a lot of fun, it did seem like there were a bunch of technical difficulties which each act had to work through. In the long run, it didn’t hurt the enjoyment of the evening.

P. Peltier

Up first was an Ohio noise artist. I know that many people are not into noise as a genre, but I definitely am. Peltier’s set was absolutely magnetic. I felt very drawn in. My biggest qualm was length. While I didn’t time it, the set felt too short to me, though that might just be a me problem. I fully recommend checking this artist out, both live and through his recorded material. Very visceral.

Angel of Mars

Describing themselves as Broom Doom Mitten Sludge, Angel of Mars plays a doomed out, psychedelic style that makes it clear that the band are fans of early Black Sabbath, but also that they are not just a straight up worship band. Strong riffs and an excellent rhythm section support the cries, wails, and songcraft of the vocalist. Another great set on the night.

Pillar of Light

What can I say about this band? I’ve been a pretty big fan from (very nearly) the beginning. If I’m remembering correctly, I was at their second ever show, when they opened for Body Void. They were excellent then, and have only improved since. In a way, I’ve been a fan since before they were a band, as about half the members were in the wonderful, but now defunct band Great Reversals. On this night, they sounded incredibly full of power and emotion. Definitely check out Pillar of Light, if you have a chance.

Plague of Carcosa

The headliners were the band hit with the worst of the technical difficulties. It seemed clear to me that they were not able to get the full sound capabilities they wanted and ended up having to modify their set on the spot. While it looked like they were maybe unhappy with the modified and shortened performance, they were still incredibly heavy and nasty. I have no problem recommending that everyone check them out as well.

Interview with all three members of the band and Hayduke X. Video by Porous.
