Welcome to our new feature! I’m sure that many of you have seen posts like the one above on various social media sites, and may have even participated yourself. That particular one was chosen at random from a thread on Bluesky, and the bands listed are not my choices (though I am a fan of #1, #4, and #5). Some of the team here at MoshPitNation were inspired by this trend to do deep dives into our 6 bands, choosing to focus on heavy bands (or at least those somewhat adjacent – I’m including R.E.M. because they are a) a rock band, and b) it would be hard to overstate the influence they have had on my listening and life, but I’m not including Outkast, because hip hop is just a little too far from the mission of MoshPitNation). I think each of us will approach this a little differently, but the core idea is the same…let’s write about the discographies of those projects which are most embedded in out DNA.
For myself, I’ll focus on the full length (and sometimes seminal EPs, demos, and comps, etc) discography of my six. Basically, I’ll choose the ones I want to choose and then write about them. To mix things up, I’ll try to go in release order, regardless of band, with one article for each release, and perhaps, if I get ambitious, a single article about other peripheral releases (splits, 7” singles, etc). I’ll see how I feel. Without further ado, here are my six. I’m choosing to arrange them in the order in which they came into my life, so this may not be the order I write about them.
- Voivod
- R.E.M.
- Propagandhi
- Baroness
- Napalm Death
- Godspeed You! Black Emperor (I’m bundling in Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra because I’m obsessed with both, they share multiple members, and because I’m making my own rules here. Lol)
We’re hopeful that this is a fun and ongoing exercise, that it draws attention to some amazing bands, and that you enjoy some insight into our listening tastes. Let us know what you think.
