Heavy Metal Reviews and Interviews

Band/Album: Lisa Cuthbert/Hextapes

Country of Origin: Ireland

Genre: Drone Doom

Label/Release Date: Iron Bonehead Productions/August 25, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

Hauntingly dark and melancholy. Cuthbert’s voice grabs the listener viscerally and draws them into her world gorgeous and bleak.

Band/Album: Dimman/Guide My Fury

Country of Origin: Finland

Genre: Melodic Death Metal

Label/Release Date: Inverse Records/August 25, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

Riffs, solo work, trad heavy metal structure. About what you’d expect from a melodeath band. Dimman does a nice job with it though.

Band/Album: Mekigah/Autexousious

Country of Origin: Australia

Genre: Avante Garde Noise

Label/Release Date: Aesthetic Death/August 21, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

Autexousious is purposefully plodding torment. I find myself drawn to difficult music and difficult albums. This latest release for this one man project fits the bill with its austere doom landscape textured by the cacophony of nightmares.

Band/Album: So This is Suffering/Palace of the Pessimist

Country of Origin: USA

Genre: Death/Black Metal

Label/Release date: Unique Leader Records/February 24, 2017

Author: Deranged D

Formed in 2006 in California, releasing multiple EPs leading up to their first self titled release in 2012 “A Death Scene on Delay.” This ten track beast of a follow up leaves no room for error. It’s brutal from top to bottom. A glorious display of death metal with touches of core. Definitely for fans of the heavy stuff.  FFO: Deicide, Cannibal Corpse.

Band/Album: Smoke Mountain/Smoke Mountain EP

Country of Origin: USA

Genre: Southern/Stoner Metal

Label/Release date: Independent/May 1, 2017

Author: Deranged D

Releasing their debut EP this year, these guys absolutely rip. Southern to the bone, just the right amount of stonery and not to forget a spoonful of Florida Doom. Female fronted and retro sounding as hell. These guys are definitely a band to watch out for. FFO: Mastodon, Queens of the Stone Age, Drain STH.

Band/Album: Ritual Knife/Hate Invocation

Country of Origin: USA

Genre: Black Metal

Label/Release Date: Fallen Empire Records/August 18, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

Ritual Knife sounds like a bunch of hardcore punks playing black metal, which it may very well be. Hate Invocation is raw and in-your-face aggressive. Listening too it is akin to experiencing a sonic cheese grater. Production values are low, so the sound is thin. None of this is detrimental, as the energy is dark and all-consuming.

Band/Album: Transit Method/We Won’t Get Out Of Here Alive

Country of Origin: USA

Genre: Rock and Roll

Label/Release Date: Brutal Panda Records/August 18, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

We may be metalheads here at MPN, but sometimes we like rock and roll too. Especially the hard pumping kind, which Transit Method is. Riffs, groove, and attitude are all prevalent on We Won’t Get Out Of Here Alive.

Band/Album: Gridfailure/Hostile Academy

Country of Origin: USA

Genre: Noise

Label/Release Date: Independent/March 24, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

Bleak…very, very bleak. This is Gridfailure, the noise project of Dave Brenner, at it’s most minimalist and bleak. This sounds like the last days of the end of all life on earth.

Band/Album: Orm/Orm

Country of Origin: Denmark

Genre: Melodic Black Metal

Label/Release Date: Interdisciplinarian/March 24, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

At times haunting, at times brutally evil sounding, this debut full length from the Danish quartet has a lot to offer. The guitars hold the heat of the embers of humanity, while the drums rage with a cleansing fire. The melodic elements are flourishes that add to the effect rather than overwhelm and detract. I’m impressed.

Band/Album – Midnite Hellion/Condemned to Hell

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Heavy Metal

Label/Release Date – Witches Brew/September 15, 2017

Author – Baker

Midnite Hellion is classic metal. If I didn’t know better, I would think this was released during the late 80’s to early 90’s. That said, there is a place for this genre. The production and sound is excellent and the tunes are sort of catchy. Nothing new or groundbreaking from this one. In fact, you might find that a song or tune sounds similar to a favorite from yore.

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Avant – Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Self Released/February 24th 2017

If Voivod actually came back from Dimension Hatröss with a hankering for Death Metal, after you took that pill that you swore you wouldn’t take and your Dog has changed his name without you knowing. Superbly mind blowing.

Genre – Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Carnal Records/February 24th 2017

Is Swe-death, is good yes? A little uninspiring to begin with, rewarding in the long run, and unlike certain stores that sell quality furniture at affordable prices no assembly is required.

These guys from the Bay Area REALLY like Death Metal. They certainly sound like Death Metal, and they REALLY like sounding like Death Metal. For shits and giggles check out their Facebook page. It’ll tell you how much they REALLY like Death Metal. For what it’s worth, I REALLY like their Death Metal. If you like Death Metal you probably will too! Did I mention how much these guys like Death Metal? Oh yeah, I did..

Country of Origin – France

Genre – Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Iron Bonehead (LP) Amor Fati (CD)/ April 7, 2017

Author – The Great Mackintosh

Hypothetical question here. If a guy manning a Bolt Thrower got Hit with a Hail Of Bullets but they both ASPHYXiated who is the winner? Well the answer is you! If you have no idea what this dribble is about then don’t go anywhere near this album. Nuff said.

Country of Origin – Brazil

Genre – Death Metal/Thrash Metal/Black Metal/Grindcore/Hardcore/Punk

Label/Release Date –  Greyhaze Records/April 7, 2017

Is it just me or does the above genre thing confuse you. They also describe themselves as a Performing Arts act. Well bugger me with a fish stick and call me Cecil, what the hell are Nervochaos? HEAVY AS SHIT is all you need to know. Heavier than a Grand Piano falling on your head from above. HEAVY, got it? Good.

Country of Origin – Germany

Genre – Doom/Death

Label/Release Date – Solitude Productions/March 27th 2017

Author – The Great Mackintosh

Hide the rope, put the razor down, remove the gun from your face, it’ll be okay. Do not listen to this if you are slightly prone to a case of the bummers. Having said that, wow what a beautiful album. Anguish put to music, agony to song, misery to sound. And I always thought the Germans were a happy folk. Greatness indeed.

Band/Album – Sloth Herder/No Pity No Sunrise

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Post Metal/Tech Death

Label/Release Date – Grimoire Records/March 24, 2017

Author – The Great Mackintosh

I’d seriously like to know who out of this band has ever seen a sloth. Maybe it was on some sort of illicit substance, because these lads are FAR from slow. Whatever genre they want to be known as these guys are certainly not slow. It tugs at familiarity. Although well played indeed, it just didn’t make me forget my own hand wasn’t a tree branch thereby plummeting to my own demise.

Band/Album – SphereDemonis

Country of Origin – Russia

Genre – Symphonic Death Metal

Label/Release Date – More Hate/April 7, 2017

Author – The Great Mackintosh

Is it just me or does Russia seem to spawn a lot of Symphonic Death Metal bands. Many seem to verge on the ridiculous with too much pomp and ceremony, becoming quite laughable in the worst cases. Not so with these young Muscovites, finding the right balance between the Symphonic and the Death aspects, blistering in parts, grand and majestic in others. The clean singing bits can grate a little but overall rather good!

Band/Album – Pimeydentuoja/Hellcrowned

Country of Origin – Finland

Genre – Black/Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Black Plague Records/March 21, 2017

Unusual name for a band. Dirty, grimy, Satanic Black Death. Festering goats feet and foul witch breath spring to mind. Perfect for that weekend of virgin sacrifice you were planning. Rotten, brutal and uncompromising. Hail Satan, he’s very misunderstood after all..

Band/Album – Neuntoter/Stench to Stench

Country of Origin – Spain

Genre – Death/Grind

Label/Release Date – Xtreem Music/April 3rd 2017

Author – The Great Mackintosh

A compilation of demos and live stuff from the early nineties. Remember that time you accidentally dropped your Ipod into the diarrhea filled toilet at the pub while Napalm Death’s early albums where on loop? Sounds a bit like that. Good shit, though pardon the pun.

Band/Album – Fuck You Pay Me / Dumbed Down

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Punk

Label/Release Date – Tankcrimes / March 24, 2017

Author – JDecker

Run of the mill punk and hardcore from the USA. Amusing samples here and there. The vocalist is probably one of the more apt for the genre working right now. Absolutely nothing new or unique here thoough. Mix/master duties should go unpaid. Short, sweet, probably good for your initial late night group party scenario to get shit on and popping.

Band/Album – Illimitable Dolor/Self-titled

Country of Origin – Australia

Genre – Death Doom

Label/Release Date – Transcending Obscurity/March 16, 2017

Author – JDecker

Traditional sounding death doom here from Australia by way of Transcending Obscurity. Nothing new or ground breaking, just well executed death doom. Atmosphere is of particular note,if anything. Keyboards and atmospheric work should be the highlight of the record, unfortunately the mixdown pushes it back a little too far. It’s heavy. It’s a slowly groovy record. Fans of death doom and/or symphonic and so-called “epic” styles of metal music, death doom or not, will probably do good to give it a listen or three.

Proper fucking heavy metal residing right on the heartbeat of everything awesome and classic about power metal. Nothing groundbreaking, but superbly written and played. If you really love blasting Maiden records, you’ll definitely wanna check this out.

Thrashy power metal of the highest caliber. A few more epic guitar solos and this one would be a 5 outta 5 for the style, sound, genre, whatever. Epic, headbanging thrash goodness that breaks down into and rolls out of epic power metal movements fluidly and naturally.

Country of Origin – Canada

Genre – Progressive Hardcore Punkwave

Label/Release Date – Tank Crimes/March 24, 2017

This record reminds me, for no good reason that I can put my finger on, of the Wrists Grow Cold record that I never shut up about. This is, undeniably, more epic tinged power infused punk and grind, but that mood and atmosphere is right up in there… between the lines.

This is a great fucking record that probably requires more attention than my ADD review here.
