Band/Album – Grá/Ramsvarta Tankar

Country of Origin – Sweden

Genre – Black Metal

Label/Release Date – Carnal Records/March 24, 2017

Author – JDecker

Two tracks of recipe perfect concoctions for black metal that meet and exceed consumer expectations. Spicing up the original recipe with some more era appropriate production, and a music video that is absolutely worth a viewing, Grá have it down to a very specific old-school nodding new-school prodding science.

In short, if you love black metal, you need to hear this.

Band/Album – Blood Moon/Through The Scarlet Veil

Country of Origin – Greece

Genre – Black Metal

Label/Release Date – Iron Bonehead/March 11, 2017

Author – JDecker

A statement from the band reads: “The Circle of BLOOD MOON was created in the Scarlet Night of Blood Moon/Full Moon of the 28th of September 2015 with the purpose to Manifest and Praise the Luciferian Principles. Through this Scarlet Veil, we invoke the Sacred Entities using the Traditions of Our Forefathers and Ancestors. Hail Lucifer.”

This is pretty goddamned incredible black metal of the highest and truest caliber, a monolithic collection of praise and worship offerings from the most cavernous bowels of something further than Hell. This might require further writings…

Country of Origin – Australia

Genre – Satanic War Metal

Label/Release Date – Hells Headbangers/March 31, 2017

Read the name of this classic Australian band. Now put all the pieces together in your head and imagine some blood soaked maniac with a rather rough looking sword and no pants on chasing a Goat. Imagine he caught the Goat. This is the sound of their lovemaking. Imagine you were actually there to see it happen. This is the soundtrack ha-ha. Great stuff.

Country of Origin – Unknown

Genre – Occult Avantgarde Black Metal

Black. None Blacker. Long winded perhaps too. If twelve minute odd sojourns into the depths of ancient lands are your thing, then by all means stand on that bleak rain soaked hill and be blown back by the force of Evil that is Digir Gidim. Doesn’t sound appealing? Corpse Paint not your thing? Move along Sunshine.

Country of Origin – Ukraine

Genre – Black Metal

Label/Release Date – More Hate Productions/March 27,2017

More Blackness to fill that void in your soul. This one flows quite well (funny guy ain’t I ha-ha). Nothing groundbreaking, but then again a fairly solid release. Mystery wrapped in a sheet of utter darkness, despair and forlorn misery.

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Rock/Punk/Grindcore/Metal

Label/Release Date – Hells Headbangers/March 3,2017

Author – The Great Mackintosh

Mentors remind me of when I was 14 and liked to play silly songs about dicks and stuff to make my friends all say wow and giggle like an arse. Nekro Drunkz grind through 3 minutes of more silliness, although it is heavy silliness at that. Meh.

Holy Fucking Riff Mania Batman! This album is just insane! Plastic surgery will surely be needed after these fuckers have removed the top layers of your skin with the utter savagery of their attack! I can’t even make any funny comments about this because I am simply blown away. Simply superbe! (that’s French for superb you nit)

Country of Origin – Belgium

Genre – Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Invictus Productions/April 7,2017

This tasty treat could well have been made in the early days of death metal and would have been well received. Raw and uncompromising, like a gravestone that has yet to be fully filled in with the final details, this is very promising stuff indeed. A band that may well be going places.

I think I just ate something weird and took a trip back in time. An enjoyable trip mind you because these guys have nailed that Old School thing to a tee. Now I also have that stupid song ‘Memories’ by some stupid idiot from some stupid musical floating around in my head too. Fuck you, Andrew Lloyd Webber Barbecue. Get this up ya.

Band/Album – Slagmaur/Thill Smits Terror

Country of Origin – Norway

Genre – Black Metal

Label/Release Date – Osmose Productions/March 30, 2017

Author – The Great Mackintosh

Ominous. Foreboding. Threatening. Frightening. Slagmaur deliver the kind of black metal that intends to make you soil your breeches, so you may want to grab a spare pair or two before you take this one on. Larger than a Cecil B. DeMille production, and twice as scary as your Aunty with the hairy lip that always wants to give you a kiss. An epic indeed.

A Wraith walks into a bar. The bartender says “Why the long face?” The Wraith then kills the insolent fuck, sits down and puts this album on. He looks back introspectively at the things he has done, and grins. He has lived beyond death itself. This music soothes him. Happy Wraith. Happy us.

Some of this reminds me of a store I once visited run by a fellow who had a lot of Goat about him on a cold morning. Mind you he was a very personable chap, and if you took the time to listen to him you would probably enjoy his tales. He did tend to talk a bit too much at times but as you left, you still felt somewhat rewarded by the experience.

Country of Origin: USA

Genre: Avantegarde Black Metal

Label/Release Date: Redefining Darkness Records/May 15, 2016

Man!  This album is tweaked out. A total horror show of dissonant noise, like something from the scene where the monsters massacre the heroes in a movie ending bloodbath. The stuff of nightmares. Love at first listen!

Band/Album: Gorepunch/Give ‘Em Hell

Country of Origin: USA

Genre: Death Metal

Label/Release Date: Seeing Red Records/August 25, 2016

Ripping death metal from Cleveland. Never ending riffs of dark goodness. This is the type of death metal I like. Aggressive, not too techy, but with some clearly talented guitar playing. Dynamic. Also, the vocals are not by Cookie Monster.

Country of Origin: USA/UK

Genre: Grindcore

Label/Release Date: Seeing Red Records/September 16, 2016

Older work by one of my favorite Michigan bands as well as a couple of songs from across the pond. Both play a style of grindcore that incorporates elements of black metal and savagery. These four tracks provide an intense listening experiences.

Pure filth. Someone found a fetid swamp on a Superfund site, scraped the bottom, exposed it to radiation, let it mold, and then drank it straight, no chaser. Once transformed by this event, they then made this album. Horrifying low end madness.

Band/Album: Ursinne/Swim With The Leviathan

Country of Origin: The Netherlands/Sweden/UK

Genre: Death Metal

Label/Release Date: Transcending Obscurity/August 20, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

For those of you who can’t get enough of Jonny Pettersson’s work, I give you Ursinne, also featuring Dave Ingram (Bolt Thrower!!!) and Sonia ‘Anubis’ Nusselder. While not quite the chaos of Henry Kane (my favorite Pettersson vehicle), Ursinne is still a vicious death metal beast. As expected, there is some pretty serious HM-2 love here for those of us who are all about that chainsaw sound.

Band/Album:  Gruesome/Fragments of Psyche

Country of Origin: USA

Genre: Death Metal

Label/Release date: Relapse Records/March 31, 2017

Author: Deranged D

Formed in 2014 because of a mutual involvement in Death’s tour “Death To All”, Matt Harvey and Gus Rios make up what is Gruesome. A gutsy and whole hearted tribute to the roots of Florida Death metal and specifically Death. This EP follows up 2015’s Savage Land and 2016s Dimensions of Horror. And Fragments of Psyche plays no games. Old school, in your face, just top-notch Death metal, along with a sweep cover of Death’s “Choke On It”. I think that’s exactly what you’ll be doing. Recommendation: For fans of Death and Cannibal Corpse

Band/Album: Khazaddum/Plagues Upon Arda

Country of Origin: USA

Genre: Brutal Death Metal

Label/Release Date: Independent/August 19, 2017

US style death metal that features themes from Tolkien and hits like Mount Doom being dropped on your head? Sign me up. This trio from Wisconsin bring the misery. There’s just enough technicality to keep it from getting too ‘brootal’, but make no mistake – Plagues of Arda will kick your ass.

Band/Album: Escarnium/Interitus

Country of Origin: Brazil

Genre: Death Metal

Label/Release Date: Redefining Darkness Records/October 14, 2016

Author: Hayduke X

Sometimes, I have trouble placing what it is I like about an album. That’s the case here. I will say that it’s seriously ominous and filthy. The riffs are visceral, tearing into your soul. Vocals are just right for death metal, neither to clean, nor too gurgly. Drums are relentless. As my students would say, this album is lit!!!

Thumping death metal of the HM-2 variety. Solidly done, but I like mine to rip more than thump, if you get my drift. I always have time for those buzzing guitar tones though.

Band/Album: Necromutilator/Ripping Blasphemy

Country of Origin: Italy

Genre: Black/Thrash Metal

Label/Release Date: Terror From Hell Records/April 7, 2017

Grimy and blasphemous first wave style black metal that mimics the thrashy style that was evolving at the time. Solid enough to have in your collection if this is a style you dig.

Band/Album: Azarath/In Extremis

Country of Origin: Poland

Genre: Black/Death Metal

Label/Release Date: Agonia Records/April 7, 2017

Death metal with black metal tendencies, especially in the drumming. The album is better in the more discordant sections, but pretty generic otherwise (though solid enough if you are into the style). Some of the more discordant moments are fairly exceptional.

Band/Album: SXAP/Cathedral

Country of Origin: USA

Genre: Black Metal

Label/Release Date: Bloody Mountain Records/April 14, 2017

Black metal which places a premium on sounding violently, ominously, intensely dark. Less evil, than terrifying, Cathedral sounds like that feeling you get when walking in the woods after dark, and you’re suddenly certain some large predator has you in their sights.

Country of Origin: Scotland

Genre: Black/Speed Metal

Label/Release Date: Granite Factory/Barbarian Wrath/Diabolic Might//April 14, 2017

This band is called Hellripper because they rip the gates of hell wide open. Demons pour forth with such speed that there is no stopping them. Actually, it’s riffs, but the result is the same. Coagulating Darkness is beautiful madness.
