Heavy Metal Reviews and Interviews

Band/Album:  Moros/Black Urn//Split

Country of Origin: USA

Genre: Sludge/Doom/Black

Label/Release Date: Independent/February 27, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

Two Philly projects that know how to bring the nastiness. Both play an interesting genre mix, with Black Urn adding some ambient loveliness to the filth and Black Urn diving right into the maelstrom. If you like dark, noisy, filthy music, this is for you.

Band/Album:  Ymir’s Blood/Ymir’s Blood

Country of Origin: Finland

Genre: Traditional Heavy Metal

Label/Release Date: Archaic Sound/March 1, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

Traditional heavy metal about Vikings? Sounds good to me. This’ll fit right in with all your NWOBHM stuff. It’s not anything that’ll blow your socks off, but it a solid addition to the style.

A vinyl re-issue of a solid post-punk release from the Washington, DC/Dischord scene featuring members of Hoover.

Band/Album: Cryptic Brood/Brain Eater

Country of Origin: Germany

Genre: Death Metal

Label/Release Date: Xtreem Music/March 1, 2017

Absolutely filthy. There are some doom influences here as well, especially in some of the pacing.

Band/Album: Cataleptic/Forward

Country of Origin: Finland

Genre: Death Doom

Label/Release Date: Archaic Sound/March 1, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

There is a lot of good stuff going on here. The promo material is billing the band as death doom, which is fair, but I also hear a lot of sludge and even hardcore influences here. May appeal to fans of Neurosis.

Band/Album: Skeletoon/Ticking Clock

Country of Origin: Italy

Genre: Power Metal

Label/Release Date: Revalve Records/March 3, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

Most of what I listen to doesn’t make it easy (or even possible) to sing along. Every now and then, though, you want to be able to raise your voice and pump your fist to a chorus. That’s where my infrequent power metal fandom comes in. Add Skeletoon to the list of bands that fit the bill.

Band/Album: Sarkrista/Summoners of the Serpents Wrath

Country of Origin: Germany

Genre: Black Metal

Label/Release Date: Purity Through Fire/March 3, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

Absolutely vicious black metal. Primarily, Sarkrista sounds like they come from the Scandinavian tradition, but there is a greater heat than the ice cold of that region. Heat as in the flames of hell.

Band/Album: Rozamov/This Mortal Road

Country of Origin: USA

Genre: Doom Metal

Label/Release Date: Battleground/Dullest//March 3, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

This Mortal Road is a solid mix of traditional doom, modern doom, and a touch of sludge. Truly a solid album, though it fails to stand out to me. One that I would never skip if it came up in shuffle, but I would also have trouble telling you which song was playing.

Band/Album: Petrification/Summon Horrendous Destruction

Country of Origin: USA

Genre: Death Metal

Label/Release Date: Sentient Ruin/March 3, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

Disgusting death metal filled with menace. Something crawled forth from a crypt that had been awakened by radioactive sewage. That something is Petrification. Sentient Ruin proves again why they are an essential label.

Band/Album: Grave Plague/The Infected Crypts

Country of Origin: USA

Genre: Death Metal

Label/Release Date: Give Praise/Redefining Darkness//March 10, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

Ripping death metal demo from a new Cleveland based entity. While this is distinctly death metal, there are some grind nuances throughout. Nice start for this band. I could see them fitting with Hells Headbangers.

Band/Album: Förgjord/Uhripuu

Country of Origin: Finland

Genre: Black Metal

Label/Release Date: Werewolf Records/March 10, 2017

Are you ready to feel constantly attacked? Like you’re being swarmed and can barely keep the demons at bay? That’s what listening to Uhripuu feels like. Visceral and vicious.

Band/Album: Deathwish/Unleash Hell

Country of Origin: USA

Genre: Crossover

Label/Release Date: Beer City Music and Skateboards/March 10, 2017

Crossover thrash is the best thrash. Deathwish put me on an auditory skateboard, with a bat in one hand and a knife in the other, ready to combat the demons of my mind. Briefly put, this album rips!!!!

Band/Album – Qrixkuor/ Incantations from the Abyss

Country of Origin – UK

Genre – Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Invictus Productions/June 6, 2017

Author – Ben Boggs

Unsettling. Creepy. Scary. These are the initial reactions when listening to the latest release by Qrixkuor. Details of the band are scarce. Little could be found that would contradict that “QRIXKUOR was born of flame and baptised in blood.” Incantations from the Abyss, according to the band’s bandcamp page,  include the long sold out ‘Consecration of the Temple’ and ‘Rehearsal 09/15’ demos now remastered for your ghoulish pleasure. This starts off like a horror movie soundtrack from which there is no escape. If you like your death metal atmospheric, upsetting and evil, this is the release for you.

Band/Album – Heresiarch/ Death Ordinance

Country of Origin – New Zealand

Genre – Death Doom

Label/Release Date – Dark Descent Records/July 7, 2017

Author – Ben Boggs

What happens when a cauldron of sludge and death metal boil over in a vat of brutal annihilation? A question I’ve often wondered myself until stumbling onto the first full length by New Zealand’s Heresiarch. Unrelenting, terrifying and pummeling. This release sees the band firing on all cylinders for a non-stop jackhammer journey into the abyss. This is not a lesson in overindulgence, however. Each song has its place in this tome of horror.  Ladies and gentlemen, this is the new sound of fear.

Band/Album – Vesicant/ Shadows of Cleansing Iron

Country of Origin – New Zealand

Genre – Black/Death Metal

Label/Release Date –  Iron Bonehead Productions/July 14, 2017

Author – Ben Boggs

Currently listed as a two-piece, this band destroys on its first full length, Their listed influences include, but are not limited to “Psychological War, World Wars, and Chemical Warfare.” War: it’s terrifying, nasty and horrible. Vesicant have successfully recorded the sounds of suffering with their latest release. The band ventures into slower, sludgier territory before indoctrinating the listener to a broken landscape of jagged riffs and rhythms. Be Afraid.

Band/Album – Paganizer/Land of Weeping Souls

Country of Origin – Sweden

Genre – Death

Label/Release Date – Transcending Obscurity/August 1, 2017

Author – Ben Boggs

The best part of discovering a band from 1998? The huge back catalog to jump into. Paganizer has been going strong for almost 30 years now. Their latest certainly does not disappoint. Never sacrificing precision for brutality, this is an excellent release for anyone who likes their death metal groovy and swinging. The production on this album is absolutely fantastic. This is classic Swedish death metal at its finest.

Band/Album: Daemoniac/Spawn of the Fallen

Country of Origin: Italy

Genre: Death Metal

Label/Release Date: Xtreem Music/January 1, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

Stockholm death metal is the best death metal. Spawn of the Fallen feels like a demon come forth to conquer, but Daemoniac (said demon) can barely control the hordes they brought forth. Exceptionally dark and chaotic, this album has been a serious grower for me, becoming one of my favorites for the year.

Band/Album: Holycide/Annihilate… Then Ask!

Country of Origin: Spain

Genre: Thrash Metal

Label/Release Date: Xtreem Music/February 1, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

Holycide is another Dave Rotten project (6 current according to Metal Archives, in addition to running Xtreem Music…busy guy). This one is aggressive war thrash, as in the aggressive side of thrash with lyrics about war, destruction, annihilation, and the like. Rotten’s bludgeoning style vocals are the perfect fit here.

Band/Album: Demonic Resurrection/Dashavatar

Country of Origin: India

Genre: Progressive Black/Death Metal

Label/Release Date: Demonstealer Records/March 15, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

Take symphonic, progressive, black, death, and power metal into a blender. Stir in some Indian mythology. Blend well. Serve hot. That’s basically the recipe for this album. While I like it a lot, I think it’s probably too epic for me. If one track comes up in shuffle, I think it would be great to sing along and pump my fist. Listening to the whole album was a little fatiguing.

Band/Album: Muro/El Cuarto Jinete

Country of Origin: Spain

Genre: Speed Metal

Label/Release Date: Fighter Records/March 15, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

Speed metal is a style I have to be in the mood for…except for Muro. This band kicks ass, as does this album. Vocalist Rocksa has just enough gravel in his style that it doesn’t become over-the-top for me. The guitar work is impressive as is the rhythm section. I’ll listen to El Cuarto Jinete any time, any place. In fact, it’s become a favorite for when I go running.

Band/Album: Panikk/Discarded Existence

Country of Origin: Slovenia

Genre: Thrash Metal

Label/Release Date: Xtreem Music/March 15, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

More Slovenian thrash? Yes please! Panikk has maybe a little more crossover leaning than label and country mates Eruption. Discarded Existence absolutely rips through nine tracks of the best in thrashing social commentary.

Band/Album: Entartung/Baptized Into the Faith of Lust

Country of Origin: Germany

Genre: Black Metal

Label/Release Date: World Terror Committee/March 16, 2017

Author: Hayduke X

Baptized is a well thought out album. Entartung does a masterful job of moving between sounds and feelings, specifically, melancholy darkness and burning vicious hatred. Basically, in audio form, this is that sense of malaise that says it’s too late for the world, then realizes that there may be hope for the earth if we just burn humanity off of it. I have no clue if the band is making any kind of political statement (probably not). That’s just how the shifting moods and sounds strike me.

Band/Album: The Raven Age/Darkness Will Rise

Modern metal with groove impulses and clean vocals. I wouldn’t change the radio station.

Band/Album: Lantern/II: Morphosis

Country of Origin: Finland

Genre: Blackened Death Metal

Label/Release Date: Dark Descent Records/March 17, 2017

Normally a lantern shines light into the darkness. This Lantern simply spreads the darkness. Angry, gloomy and dark all at the same time, II: Morphosis drags you along for a bumpy ride. Seatbelts won’t help.

Unhinged aggression fueled by societal rage. This is bloody knuckles holding a molotov cocktail kind of music.
