Rage and Frustration

Extreme Music Reviews & Interviews

Band/Album – Blood Tyrant/Aristocracy of Twilight

Country of Origin – The Netherlands

Genre – Black Metal

Label/Release Date – Iron Bonehead/December 16, 2016

Raw black metal with some symphonic touches deep in the mix to keep things balanced.  The guttural vocals are also balanced by choral notes in the background.  The overall effect is quite good.

Rating:  3/5

Band/Album – Omnizide/NekroRegime

Country of Origin – Sweden

Genre – Black/Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Carnal Records/Daemon Worship Productions/December 16, 2016

Solid black/death mix featuring the superb vocals by Nox of Craft fame.  This one rips through you and you don’t even really realize it.

Rating:  3.5/5

Band/Album – Varaha/Varaha

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Post-Metal

Label/Release Date – Independent/December 16, 2016

Melancholy and dreamy post-metal.  There are a few more intense moments, but they are relatively few and far between.

Rating:  2.5/5

Band/Album – Rivette/In Vertigo

Country of Origin – Finland

Genre – Rock & Roll

Label/Release Date – Ektro/December 16, 2016

Solid and interesting rock music.  The band sounds like they come from the 80s.  Nothing really to set them apart though.

Rating:  2.5/5

Band/Album – Gravebreaker/Sacrifice

Country of Origin – Sweden

Genre – Heavy Metal

Label/Release Date – Gates of Hell Records/December 16, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Traditional heavy metal from the home of Melodeath.  Gravebreaker connects all the heavy metal dots and colors in the lines.  They do a nice job of fitting into an established genre.

Band/Album – Call of the Void/AYFKM

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Metallic Hardcore

Label/Release Date – Translation Loss/December 16, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Angry hardcore with strong metal influences.  The combination of influences is interesting and well done, but has somehow never struck me quite right.  I know a lot of people in the scene that like this better than I do.

Rating:  3/5

Band/Album – Siniestro/Revelations in Mayhem

Country of Origin – Sweden

Genre – Thrash Punk

Label/Release Date – Bleeding Heart Nihilist Productions/December 19, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Slightly raw, rough around the edges thrash music with serious punk influences.  Coming from Stockholm, the mix makes sense.  Pretty solid album.

Band/Album – Putrified/The Flesh. The Scythe. The Tomb.

Country of Origin – Sweden

Genre – Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Unholy Prophecy/December 19, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Vicious Swedish death metal in the Stockholm style.  Putrified plays a couple original tracks on side A, then intersperses brief interludes with a Misfits cover and a Celtic Frost cover.  This 7” will repeatedly punch you in the throat.

Rating:  4/5

Band/Album – Gutted/Martyr Creation

Country of Origin – Hungary

Genre – Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Xtreem Music/December 20, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Downtuned hell!  Gutted played a guttural style of death metal with enough technicality to keep things interesting without going overboard.  A solid release with lots of nice flourishes.  I love the brief string interlude on Deeper Than Hell.

Band/Album – Botanist/Oskoreien//EP3: Green Metal/Deterministic Chaos

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Atmospheric Black Metal

Label/Release Date – Avantegarde Music/December 22, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Botanist plays a post-black metal style which is very atmospheric and melodic.  It can be both pretty and ugly in the same moment. Oskoreien has a little more edge (like nails on a chalkboard) to their style.  Overall, these are relatively similar projects.

Rating:  3/5

Band/Album – Beating Dead Meat/With Full Force

Country of Origin – Finland

Genre – Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Inverse Records/December 23, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Death metal with some groove, that heads towards the modern “core” side of the genre.  Lots of chugging riffs and raspy yelling.

Rating:  2.5/5

Band/Album – Centrate/Ritual

Country of Origin – Germany

Genre – Thrash Metal

Label/Release Date – Independent/December 24, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Sweet German thrash that channels legends like Sodom and Kreator.  No frills and no new ground broken, but a solid choice nonetheless.

Rating:  3/5

Band/Album – Paria/Knochenkamp

Country of Origin – Germany

Genre – Black Metal

Label/Release Date – World Terror Committee Productions/December 25, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Jarring, angular, and chaotic, Paria plays a black metal that leans raw.  Solid enough, but doesn’t really set itself apart.

Band/Album – Cultes Des Ghoules/Coven, Or Evil Ways Instead of Love

Country of Origin – Poland

Genre – Black Metal

Label/Release Date – Hells Headbangers/February 17, 2017

Author – Hayduke X

This album is weird in the best possible way.  The atmosphere is intensely dark, but also theatrical. Coven is essentially a five act musical performance (almost a radio play, but without a script).  Excellent!  Don’t miss out.

Rating:  4.5/5

Band/Album – White Death/White Death

Country of Origin – Finland

Genre – Black Metal

Label/Release Date – Werewolf Records/February 17, 2017

Author – Hayduke X

Fairly orthodox black metal that doesn’t break a lot of new ground and yet is brilliantly rendered.  It’s like White Death has chopped up the masters of the genres, added a little of their own fiery intensity to give it their own flavor, and given us something beautiful.

Band/Album – Moloch/Verwustung

Country of Origin – Ukraine

Genre – Black Metal

Label/Release Date – Argento Records/February 24, 2017

Author – Hayduke X

Verwustung, as released in February on Argento, is a re-release of a brilliant album by the exceptional Moloch.  As always, the music is raw and ugly while also being uncompromisingly beautiful.  The juxtaposition of the two dimensions is intense.

Band/Album – Cold Fell/Irwell

Country of Origin – UK

Genre – Atmospheric Black Metal

Label/Release Date – Argento Records/February 24, 2017

Author – Hayduke X

Another Argento release, this time from relative newcomer Cold Fell.  The project has only been in business since 2013 and this is their first full length.  It is apparent that they used their time wisely to create an album worth listening to, namely Irwell, a dark and bruising brooder.

Band/Album – Holocausto/War Metal Massacre

Country of Origin – Brazil

Genre – Black/Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Nuclear War Now/March 1, 2017

Author – Hayduke X

Originally released in 2016, this EP is a return to brutal form for these Brazilian masters who have been doing this since 1985! Apparently called metalcore at the time, (before modern metalcore was a thing), this brutality of this is a close cousin to war metal.

Band/Album – Death Worship/Extermination Mass

Country of Origin – Canada

Genre – War Metal

Label/Release Date – Nuclear War Now/March 15, 2017

What would you expect from those who have been involved with Blasphemy and Revenge.  Total mastery of dark brutality!

Rating:  4/5

Band/Album – Acrimonious/Eleven Dragons

Country of Origin – Greece

Genre – Black Metal

Label/Release Date – World Terror Committee/March 20, 2017

Author – Hayduke X

A beautifully lush soundscape.  Mid-paced and calming.  Terror inducing when you realize that something isn’t quite right.  It’s hard to put your finger on, but Acrimonious have done a masterful job of intertwining darkness in majesty.

Rating:  4/5

Band/Album – Keitzer/Ascension

Country of Origin – Germany

Genre – Deathgrind

Label/Release Date – Give Praise Records/March 31, 2017

Author – Hayduke X

You’ll probably need stitches after listening to this one, as Keitzer absolutely rip the listener apart.  Dark, angry, and coming for blood, Keitzer take no prisoners in their prototypical deathgrind attack.

Rating:  4/5

Band/Album – Hoover/Hoover

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Post-Hardcore

Label/Release Date – BCore/October 1, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Coming out of the mid-90s DC Hardcore scene, this re-issue is a bridge album between hardcore and post-hardcore.  I’m grateful for the re-issue by BCore.

Band/Album – Killsorrow/A Little Something for You to Choke On

Country of Origin – Poland

Genre – Melodic Thrash Metal

Label/Release Date – Art of the Nights/November 2, 2016

Nearly Melodic Death metal, but with thrash riffs and sensibility.  Solid enough if not really my style.

Rating:  2.5/5

Band/Album – Cowardice/Without Condolence

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Sludge/Doom

Label/Release Date – Independent/December 29, 2016

Slow, heavy, and menacing with brutal vocals that would fit well for fans of Thou.  Prepare to be punished.

Band/Album – Plasmodium/Entheognosis

Country of Origin – Australia

Genre – Black/Death

Label/Release Date – Cimmerian Shade/December 29, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Cimmerian Shade always finds the most brutally ugly bands.  Pair that with the fundamental viciousness currently found in the Australian extreme scene, and you have something worth listening…if you want to bring your worst nightmares to the surface.
