Country of Origin – Chile

Genre – Black Metal

Label/Release Date – Iron Bonehead / August 23, 2016

If it’s Iron Bonehead, it’s legit af. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Buy and push play.

Country of Origin – Chile

Genre – Death Metal / Black Metal

If it’s Iron Bonehead, it’s legit af. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Buy and push play. (No this is not a mindless copy/paste – if Iron Bonehead releases it, you need to listen to it. This is no exception).

Band/Album – Bestial Raids / Master Satan’s Witchery

Country of Origin – Poland

Genre – Black Metal / Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Nuclear War Now / November 13, 2016

Author – JDecker

Nuclear War Now has long served as a launch point for over the top and extreme metal acts that, despite silly names or album titles, still happen to be incredibly viable and important. Bestial Raids’ album “Master Satan’s Witchery” is no exception. Production value falls short, overall, but mood and vibe hail supreme on this 7 track banger that delivers some of the better upfront black metal inspired death metal you’ll hear in a while.

Band/Album – Decrepit Throne / Traitor’s Grave

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Black Metal

Latter day black metal that I wouldn’t and haven’t turned off when it’s come up in my playlist.

Band/Album – One Master / Lycanthropic Burrowing

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Black Metal

Label/Release Date – Eternal Death / July 14, 2017

Author – JDecker

Absolutely punishing black metal of the highest caliber. I would push for a full length review of this one, but there’s not a lot to be said other than – if you like newschool and oldschool black metal, USBM especially, you’re going to fucking love this one.

Band/Album – Skeletal / Dreadful Life

Country of Origin – Finland

Genre – Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Inverse Records / February 2, 2017

Author – JDecker

Top quality ripping death metal with heavy thrash overtones. Great riffs, forthright vocals, impending moment a la deathy varieties of metal. If you like thrashy oldschool death metal, can overlook some questionable choices in production – you’ll dig it to one degree or another.

Band/Album – Miserist/Miserist EP

Country of Origin – Australia

Genre – Instrumental Black/Death

Label/Release Date – Krucyator Productions/February 13, 2017

Author – Hayduke X

When you call something both experimental and instrumental, as the does the promotional materials I received with this release does, I really expect it to be boring. That is not the case here. Miserist is probably not my everyday cup of tea, but, like fellow one man Australian project Judd Madden, Ryan Herbertson creates an engaging atmosphere.  The riffs are dark, reverb soaked, and crunchy.  Drums sound programmed, but still capture an organic feel.  Nicely done, overall.

Band/Album – Naddred/Sluagh

Country of Origin – Ireland

Genre – Black Metal

Label/Release Date – Invictus Productions/February 13, 2017

Author – Hayduke X

Angular and chaotic, Naddred sounds like madness screaming into the void.  Featuring a relatively raw production and a warmer sound more akin to the South American black metal than any European scene, Sluagh is a brief 20 minute thrill ride into the darkest parts of oblivion.  An exceptional debut for this new band.

Band/Album – The Mist / Phantasmagoria

Country of Origin – Brazil

Genre – Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Greyhaze Records / 2017

Author – JDecker

This shit originally came out in 1989. Thank god it got re-issued, because there are few things happening like this right now. Death, Atheist, Believer, early Slayer. If any of those things get you excited, you need this. I’m actually marginally appalled if you don’t know and love it, but I suppose we’re not all old farts.

Band/Album – Aborted Fetus/The Art of Violent Torture

Country of Origin – Russia

Genre – Brutal Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Comatose Music/April 28, 2017

Author – The Metal Evangelist

A Russian bootleg in and of itself.  While attempting to pay homage to obvious heroes Aborted & Dying Fetus, these guys miss the mark and come across as an unnecessary clone.

Band/Album – Artificial Brain/Infrared Horizons

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Technical Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Profound Lore//April 21, 2017

Author – The Metal Evangelist

Blends the spastic speed riffing of Voivod with the dissonant death metal of Gorguts, topped off with inhuman gutturals akin to Demilich.

Band/Album – Golden Pyre/In Eminent Disgrace

Country of Origin – Portugal

Genre – Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Chaosphere Recordings//April 15, 2017

Author – The Metal Evangelist

This band sounds like a tribute to mid-90’s Morbid Angel.  Act accordingly based on the gut reaction you got from reading that sentence.

Band/Album – Casket Huffer/Gospels of Scum

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Hibernation Release//April 21, 2017

Author – The Metal Evangelist

Blackened death metal with thrashy riffs and vocals that flip-flop between deep, guttural growls and demonic shrieks.  I had no idea there were even metal bands in Wyoming, and find it hard to believe they would be this good.

Band/Album – Hideous Divinity/Adveniens

Country of Origin – Italy

Genre – Technical Brutal Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Unique Leader Records//April 28, 2017

Brutal tech death that will set your speakers on fire and leave your stereo a smoking crater.  You kids don’t own stereos anymore, do you?  Then… this album will melt the earbuds into your skull.

Band/Album – In Death…/The Devil Speaks

Country of Origin – Australia

Genre – Deathcore

Label/Release Date – Independent/April 21, 2017

Generic deathcore that you’ve heard 100 times before.  Decent production and songwriting, but nothing new to offer.

Band/Album – Sarcasm/Within the Sphere of Ethereal Minds

Country of Origin – Sweden

Genre – Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Dark Descent Records//April 28, 2017

Comeback album from these melodic death veterans who are peers with Necrophobic, Sacramentum & Eucharist.  Sounds like they never left and will transport you back to 1995.

Band/Album – Vomit Remnants/Hyper Groove Brutality

Country of Origin – Japan

Genre – Slam Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Unique Leader Records//April 21, 2017

Author – The Metal Evangelist

You can’t make the music “moar brootal” by cranking the gain knobs on the board, but these guys tried.  Which is a shame because I like most of the riffs, even the groove ones.  But goddamn, this is a brick-walled mess.

Band/Album – Apostate Viaticum/Before the Gates of Gomorrah

Country of Origin – Ireland

Genre – Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Invictus Productions//March 13, 2017

Author – The Metal Evangelist

Eerie and ominous mid-paced and raw death metal.  Think Triptykon except the songs aren’t overly drawn-out and there are some faster, moshable passages throughout the album.

Band/Album – Invasion/Destroyer of Mankind

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Abyss Records//February 17, 2017

Author – The Metal Evangelist

Invasion are obsessed with World War II and old-school death metal.  They make both sound fresh on this album and take you back in time to visit an era where the fate of the world was actually in jeopardy.  The music itself has an uneasy tension that provides the perfect backdrop for the subject matter.  The production is stellar and the performances are excellent on this record.  Don’t sleep on this one.

Band/Album – Electric Lords/High Voltage Kingdom

Country of Origin – Russia

Genre – Stoner Metal

Label/Release Date – Independent/November 22nd, 2016

Pretty standard meat and potatoes stoner metal/rock. There is nothing here that wows me, but it is well done and fuzzed out. If that is your thing, give them a shot.

Band/Album – Anticlockwise/Raise Your Head

Country of Origin – Italy

Genre – Progressive Thrash Metal

Label/Release Date – Revalve Productions/December 16th, 2016

Slightly over the top, but only slightly, progressive metal with thrash roots and power metal tendencies (especially in some of the vocals). I enjoyed this more than I expected.

Band/AlbumRites of Thy Degringolade/The Universe in Three Parts

Country of Origin – Canada

Genre – Blackened Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Nuclear War Now! Productions/February 15th, 2017

Author – Hayduke X

Raw, distonal death metal with some black metal leanings. Rites of Thy Degringolade is an old project (formed in the late 90’s as a one-man project). This is their first new music since being reformed in 2015 and features a full quartet.

Country of Origin – Japan

Genre – Grindcore/Powerviolence

Label/Release Date – Sentient Ruin Laboratories/February 17th, 2017

In addition to the above mentioned genres, there is a fair bit of sludge here. The creation is obscenely vicious and punishing, but drags in parts to me.

Band/Album – Vomit Angel/Sadomatic Evil

Country of Origin – Denmark

Genre – Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Iron Bonehead/February 17th, 2017

Author – Hayduke X

I believe JDecker already filled you in on what to do with Iron Bonehead releases. This thing is filthy, putrid, and completely lo-fi. There is basically no production value. That doesn’t make it an every day listen for me, but there are days where this will be just the thing to take me into the void.

Hailing from the other side of the state in Detroit, Hate Unbound play a solid blend of the above mentioned genres. The band does a nice job of fitting into a crowded field.
