Heavy Metal Reviews and Interviews

Band/Album – Stench Price/Stench Price

Country of Origin – International

Genre – Grindcore

Label/Release Date – Transcending Obscurity/November 30, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

An international supergroup featuring featuring brutal death-grind mixed with…well…mixed with lounge music.  Not as gimmicky as it sounds, listening to this album carries a similar type of fascination as watching a car crash happen.

Band/Album – Levels/Exist

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Progressive Metalcore

Label/Release Date – Independent/May 7, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Not my thing, but I’m sure some of you will like it.  As a teen, we had thrash to drive our parents nuts.  This generation has chuggy, chunky riffs and that mix of clean vocals and yelling (sometimes in the same sentence).

Band/Album – Selvans/Downfall of Nur//Split

Country of Origin – Italy/Argentina

Genre – Atmospheric Black Metal

Label/Release Date – Avante Garde Music/November 7, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Captivating and strange, this collaborative split release is difficult to explain in words.  It must be listened to.  It really isn’t enough to say that it is atmospheric with folk influence or that the theme is the birth and death of a day.  The split, especially the middle two tracks are captivating.  The intro and outro could have been replaced with two true tracks in my opinion.  There fine, but the other two are special.

Band/Album – Firmam3nt/Firmament

Country of Origin – Spain

Genre – Post-Metal

Label/Release Date – Nooirax/July 28, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Djent-y and proggy instrumental metal.  This band probably has some sounds that some of you like to hear.  Well played and interesting, though it all just kind-of passes me by without sticking.

Band/Album – Toxic Ruin/Subterranean Terror

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Thrash Metal

Label/Release Date – Independent/August 11, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Standard thrash fare with an old school feel.  These gents from Wisconsin do a nice job of playing solid, tight riffs with equally solid vocals and rhythm section. Nothing new, but well done nonetheless.

Band/Album – Nangilima/Shards of Loss

Country of Origin – Sweden/Spain

Genre – Death Doom

Label/Release Date – Xtreem Music/September 27, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Slightly overwrought death doom.  I know the genre is supposed to be emotional, but this one feels like it goes a little too far into sorrow.  On the other hand, the two tracks here are beautifully atmospheric.

Band/Album – Aggression/The Full Treatment (Re-Issue)

Country of Origin – Canada

Genre – Thrash Metal

Label/Release Date – Xtreem Music/October 1, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Originally released in 1987, The Full Treatment still rips!  There is plenty of pent up anger to go with the raw riffing and driving rhythms.  There will always be something special to me about thrash from my homeland.

Band/Album – The Ritual Aura/Taether

Country of Origin – Australia

Genre – Technical Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Lacerated Enemy/November 11, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

A little too techie for my taste (which leaves it sounding pretty emotionless, in my opinion), but everything sounds competently played and there is plenty of dynamics.  Probably worth checking out if you like the technical side of metal.

Band/AlbumDeteriorot/In Ancient Beliefs

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Xtreem Music/November 20, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Slow burning and raw, this album is musically a little closer to the side of death metal I enjoy.  Some of the guitar tones are seriously ominous.  The vocals strike me wrong though.

Band/AlbumMordant/Demonic Satanic

Country of Origin – Sweden

Genre – Death/Thrash/Black Metal

Label/Release Date – To The Death Records/November 30, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Ripping metal with heavy speed and thrash metal influence, Mordant relies on speed of riffing and solid playing to try to overcome lack of complexity in composition.

Band/Album – Famishgod/Roots of Darkness

Country of Origin – Spain

Genre – Death Doom

Label/Release Date – Xtreem Music/December 1, 2016

Quite good death doom.  Famishgod has plenty of dynamics, room for emotion, lots of build and release of tension, and solid playing. I quite enjoy this one.

Band/Album Muro/El Cuarto Jinete

Country of Origin Spain

Genre Speed/Heavy Metal

Label/Release Date –  Fighter Records/Mar. 15, 2017

Author – Grimmia

El Cuatro Jinete (The Four Horsemen) is Muro’s latest, and last, release with their original line up. It has a very classic heavy metal feel, but with all the fun of speed metal. The lyrics are entirely in Spanish, but that doesn’t make the music any less enjoyable.

Band/Album – Entity of Hate/Cursed for Eternity

Country of Origin – India

Genre – Black Metal

Label/Release Date – Independent/January 20, 2017

Author – Baker

This is a four track EP with one of those being an instrumental (Castlevania Theme). The lead singer, Hex, was in Diabolus Arcanium prior to forming in 2016. He had a small stint in a group named Cybernation, but that sound was different than the black metal of EOH. The group is from India and the songs are typical black metal, growling vocals, melodic metal music.

Band/Album – Leprous

Country of Origin – Norway

Genre – Progressive Metal

Label/Release Date – Inside Out/November 25, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Arena sized progressive rock with lots of melody and lots of melancholy.  This is a live recording, which I normally don’t like, but they did a professional job here.

Band/Album – The Workhorse III/Closer to Relevance

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Rock & Roll

Label/Release Date – Independent/December 9, 2016

Rock/heavy metal with plenty of grit and monster riffs.  There are moments on the album when they appear to be channeling Motorhead.

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Dark Soundtrack

Label/Release Date – Relapse Records/December 2, 2016

Perfect for those times you just want to chill, but still need a dark atmosphere.  Steve Moore creates ambient music for the ill-adjusted.

Band/Album – Lago/Calm Hatchery//Split 7”

Country of Origin – USA/Poland

Genre – Death Metal

Label/Release Date – Selfmadegod/Battleground/December 2, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Lago brings us Dominion, a driving downtuned nightmare of punishing death metal.  On the Calm Hatchery side we have Distant Pulsation, a more dynamic and pulsating torture.  Both tracks reek of destruction.

Band/Album – Sound Storm/Vertigo

Country of Origin – Italy

Genre – Symphonic Power Metal

Label/Release Date – Rockshots Records/December 2, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Symphonic, progressive, and theatrical, Vertigo is a fun listen, but really falls more on the rock side of the divide.

Band/Album – Gnaw Their Tongues/Hymns for the Broken, Swollen and Silent

Country of Origin – Netherlands

Genre – Blackened Experimental Noise

Label/Release Date – Consouling Sounds/December 9, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

This is nothing short of the soundtrack to your darkest and most deranged nightmare.  This album feels utterly, devastatingly broken, while still being strangely cohesive and entirely unsettling.
Rating:  4/5

Band/Album – Sacrificio/Guerra Eterna

Country of Origin – Spain

Genre – Black Metal

Label/Release Date – Iron Bonehead/Nuclear War Now/December 9, 2016

Black metal with plenty of thrash and even death influence.  Sacrificio gives a pretty old school sound.

Band/Album – Cliterati/Cliterati EP

Country of Origin – USA

Genre – Hardcore Punk

Label/Release Date – Tankcrimes/December 9, 2016

5 total rippers of hardcore punk, in-your-face angry.  Cliterati is inclusive by examples and definitely political.

Band/Album – Goat Worship/Blood and Steel

Country of Origin – Brazil

Genre – Black Metal

Label/Release Date – Xtreem Music/December 10, 2016

Filthy South American one-man black metal.  Hades vomits vocals over the war machine he has created for himself.

Band/Album – Heavens Decay/The Great Void of Mystery

Country of Origin – Mexico/USA

Genre – NWOBHM

Label/Release Date – Chaos Records/December 12, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

In the mood for something like Judas Priest, but not the legends themselves?  Heavens Decay does a nice job of playing the NWOBHM sound.  They are a reactionary band in that they don’t push boundaries.  Instead, they focus on playing their chosen style well.

Band/Album – Grafvitnir/Obeisance to a Witch Moon

Country of Origin – Sweden

Genre – Black Metal

Label/Release Date – Carnal Records/Daemon Worship Productions/December 16, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Hailing from a country better known for it’s death metal, this three piece demonstrates that Sweden can also produce vicious black metal.  Obeisance to a Witch Moon gets its hooks in you early and won’t let go.  A dark and immersive experience.

Band/Album – Do Skonu/Hell

Country of Origin – Ukraine

Genre – Black Metal

Label/Release Date – Forever Plagued/December 16, 2016

Author – Hayduke X

Ukrainian black metal very much on the raw side.  I love black metal but will be the first to admit I’m not trve cvlt.  I know that low production value is part of the deal, but sometimes bands take this too far.  Do Skonu isn’t ridiculously far down this road, but they are somewhat too far for my tastes.
